questions & answers

Will I feel comfortable in a YOM missions team?

If you have a heart for missions and want to grow spiritually, yes! YOM missions trips are a great way to discover God’s leading in your life. You’ll get an amazing cross-culture experience while working with friendly team members and leaders in a Christian environment.

What are YOM’s doctrinal beliefs?

YOM firmly stands on the Bible with its goal to train missions teams to honor and glorify God. For more details, read our Articles of Faith.

What opportunities for service will be available?

Service opportunities will include children’s ministries, music ministries, witnessing, teaching, and many other missions/church ministries.

What should I wear?

Before you pack, read YOM’s dress code and consider the climate and culture of your host country.
If you’re still not sure what’s appropriate, consult your team leader. They can give tips on typical dress and cultural standards.

Do I need to learn the language of my host country?

Before your trip, ask your team leader how much of an understanding of the language you’ll need. For most team members, it isn’t possible to completely learn the local language before the trip. But if you’d like to learn some basic words and phrases, go to our Learn a Language page for online resources and translation apps.

You might also want to ask your leader these questions:

What is the primary language spoken by the local population?

Are many locals also fluent in other languages or dialects?

How should I greet a peer? How should I greet an authority figure?

How do I express gratitude in the local language?

What should I know about the country’s spiritual life and practices?

Knowing the spiritual context of your host country can help you have a better understanding of how to witness and minister to the people you meet.

To prepare for your trip, you can research on your own or ask your team leader questions like these:

What is the primary religion?

How does the average citizen practice religious beliefs?

What knowledge will the average citizen have about Jesus?

How does this culture view evangelical Christians?
